Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) |
On the ICC's second board meeting of 2016 held on 24th April at the ICC headquarters in Dubai, the board has decided to suspend the membership of "Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN)" due to the breach of Article 2.9 of the ICC's Article of Association, which prohibits government interference and requires free and fair elections.
This decision was made as a result of the ongoing court case between CAN and Nepalese National Sports Council (NSC), which made the Nepalese cricket vulnerable and left a vacuum of leadership.
What does this mean for Nepali Cricket?
Due to the suspension, CAN won't receive any funds from the ICC and will not be considered as a representative for Nepali cricket team. However considering that the players should not suffer due to the suspension, the board as declared that Nepal cricket teams would be allowed to continue to feature in the ICC events.
How long the suspension?
The ICC board has clarified that it won't tolerate any interference from the government in the affairs of its members as it wants its members to work independently. The ICC's website has stated that "Until such time as the CAN becomes free of government interference and is properly structured to begin exploiting the tremendous cricket talent and opportunities that exist in Nepal, the membership of CAN will remain suspended."Read all the outcomes from ICC Board meetings here.
